If you have opened a newspaper or turned on your television during the last month, then I don’t have to tell you that the number on topic onevery one’s mind seems to be the swine flu virus. As the news started to spread that the H1N1 flu virus was believed to be responsible for more than one hundred deaths in Mexico, people started to panic about the virus having the same effect around the world. While swine flu has continued to spread throughout the world (appearing in everywhere from the United States to Australia), it’s percentage of fatalities have decreased significantly. The reason that I am bringing up this fact is that while I could understand widespread worry if this flu virus was killing a significant amount of people, I don’t understand the ongoing worries at this point. Since the panic level of people around the world has failed to decline (although there is every reason for them to worry less), countries are still taking a hard stance on swine flu.
Although I think it is safe to assume that people are going to continue to worry about swine flu for the foreseeable future, I’m not letting it get in the way of my summer plans. I have a trip to London planned for the end of July, and in spite of all the worries that people around the world are having, I will definitely be going there and having a great time. In addition to booking my flight and hotel room, I have already reserved a London car rental, so there’s no way I am going through the process of canceling all of those reservations. However, because people have a short attention span, I’m guessing that they will have already calmed down by the time my trip actually gets here and I won’t even have to worry about canceling it!
